IRC started in the United States with the St. Francis YC announcing that it was switching to the IRC rating rule for 2004.  In 2004 there were fewer than 50 IRC-rated boats in the United States.  But things changed in 2005 when New York, Storm Trysail, Annapolis, Stamford and American yacht clubs all announced they were also switching to the IRC rating rule.  By the end of 2005 more than 500 boats had IRC Certificates and more than 60 yacht clubs and event organizers were offering IRC racing.
